Berrien County Overview
Berrien County District Courts - Traffic Records
Berrien County has two District Court locations that handle traffic ticket records. The St. Joseph courthouse processes cases from the northern and central parts of the county. The Niles location handles cases from the southern part, including the city of Niles and surrounding townships. Both courts are part of the same judicial district and maintain records through the Michigan courts system.
The Circuit Court at 811 Port Street in St. Joseph handles more serious traffic matters, including felony charges and appeals from the District Courts. County Clerk Sharon Tyler oversees the Circuit Court records. For most traffic ticket inquiries, though, the District Court is the right first contact. The county website at berriencounty.org has contact details and office hours for all court locations.
Civil infractions under MCL 257.907 cover the vast majority of Berrien County traffic tickets. These are not criminal charges. The maximum civil fine is $100 for most violations, and a $40 Justice System Assessment is added. Commercial vehicle violations can carry fines up to $250. Payment can be made directly to the court that handled the case.

Point Violations and Berrien County Traffic Records
A traffic conviction in Berrien County follows the same point system that applies across all of Michigan. Under MCL 257.320, the Secretary of State assigns points based on the type of violation. Points stay on record for two years from the conviction date, not the violation date.
Some of the most common violations and their point values are speeding 11 to 15 mph over (3 points), speeding 16 or more over (4 points), and careless driving (3 points). OWI, reckless driving, and hit-and-run convictions each carry 6 points. A warning letter goes out at 6 points within two years. Driver reexamination becomes mandatory at 12 points. At 18 points, the Secretary of State can suspend your license. These thresholds apply whether the conviction came from the St. Joseph court or the Niles location.
Under MCL 257.320a, if a Berrien County officer writes multiple violations from a single traffic stop, only the highest point violation counts toward your total. This applies statewide and is not something individual counties can override.
Note: A court-approved traffic safety course may allow some Berrien County drivers to reduce points or avoid a conviction entry, depending on the judge's discretion.Driving Records for Berrien County Drivers
Berrien County traffic convictions appear on your Michigan driving record once the court reports the outcome to the Secretary of State. Under MCL 257.328, a Michigan driving record must include your name, address, date of birth, license number, license status, all traffic violations, accident data, and current points. This is the document insurers and employers look at when evaluating your driving history.
You can get your record online through the ExpressSOS portal for $12. A non-certified copy costs $11. Both options give you immediate access to the full record. For mail requests, send form BDVR-154 with payment to Michigan Department of State, Record Sales Unit, 7064 Crowner Drive, Lansing, MI 48918. Allow three to five business days plus transit time for mail processing.
Anyone requesting records about another person must provide a permissible purpose under MCL 257.208c. Insurance companies, legal counsel in active litigation, and employers with commercial driver needs are among those with valid purposes. Personal data in the record is redacted without a stated purpose.

It is separate from the court record, which you access through MiCOURT or the District Court clerk.
