Wayne County Driving Records from the Secretary of State
Court records and driving records are two different things. Court records come from the district court and show the full case file. Driving records come from the Michigan Secretary of State and show your license status, points, and conviction history. Both can be useful depending on what you need.
Under MCL 257.328, a Michigan driving record must include the driver's full name and address, date of birth, license number, license status, all traffic convictions, accident history, and points accumulated. Points stay on your record for two years from the conviction date under MCL 257.320. Reaching 12 or more points in two years triggers a mandatory driver reexamination with the Secretary of State.
You can get your own driving record online through the ExpressSOS portal at the Michigan Secretary of State website. The cost is $12.00 per record. You need your driver's license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number to create an account. Payment is by credit or debit card, and you can view and print the record right away. Mail requests take 3 to 5 business days plus delivery time.
Note: Even if no record is found after a search, the Secretary of State still charges the $12.00 fee.
Search Wayne County Traffic Cases Online
The MiCOURT case search system at the Michigan Courts website lets you look up traffic cases from courts across the state, including Wayne County. You can search by name, case number, or other identifiers. Results show case status, party names, court dates, and disposition. MiCOURT is free to use. It is good for finding basic information quickly without calling a court or visiting in person.
The 36th District Court also shows up in MiCOURT searches. Keep in mind that some case details may not be visible online. For complete records, certified copies, or documents from closed cases, you still need to go through the court directly. Under MCL 257.617, police must prepare accident reports within 24 hours when a crash involves injury, death, or property damage over $1,000. Accident reports go to the Michigan State Police Traffic Safety Division within five days. These are separate from court records and require a different request process.
