Livingston County Driving Records and the SOS
Court records and driving records are two different things. The District Court keeps the case file for your traffic ticket. The Michigan Secretary of State keeps your driving record, which lists all traffic convictions and points. When a Livingston County court enters a conviction, that court sends the data to the Secretary of State, who updates your driving record under MCL 257.328.
You can get your own driving record from the Secretary of State through the ExpressSOS portal at mvic.sos.state.mi.us. The cost is $12.00 for a standard record. You will need your driver's license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number to log in. The record shows all traffic violations, points, and any license sanctions. A non-certified copy costs $11.00, and a certified copy costs $12.00.
You can also request records by mail using Form BDVR-154. Send the completed form with a check or money order to the Record Sales Unit at 7064 Crowner Drive, Lansing, MI 48918. Processing by mail takes 3 to 5 business days plus mail time.
Note: Points from Livingston County traffic convictions stay on your driving record for two years from the conviction date under MCL 257.320.
Traffic Ticket Points in Livingston County
Livingston County traffic tickets that result in conviction add points to your Michigan driving record. The point system is set by state law. Two points apply to open alcohol container violations and most other moving violations not listed elsewhere. Three points go on your record for careless driving, disobeying a traffic signal, improper passing, or speeding 11 to 15 mph over the limit. Four points apply to drag racing, impaired driving, speeding 16 or more mph over the limit, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Six points are assigned for the most serious offenses: manslaughter, OWI or DUI, reckless driving, hit and run, fleeing police, and refusal of a chemical test. If you reach 12 or more points in a two-year period, the Secretary of State will schedule you for a mandatory driver reexamination. That meeting can result in restrictions, suspension, or revocation of your license. The Michigan Secretary of State publishes a full points list at michigan.gov.
Civil infractions in Livingston County carry a maximum fine of $100 for general violations, plus a $40 Justice System Assessment per violation.
